In 2023, the Luc Brewaeys Foundation was established with the aim to actively preserve and continue the musical legacy of Luc Brewaeys.

Promoting and encouraging performances of his music is one of the project's primary goals, alongside fostering a deeper understanding of his work.

This project is a pilot initiative on the legacies of artistic heritage, supported by the Flemish Community.

Focus and goals

The Luc Brewaeys’ Symphonic Legacy project focuses on Brewaeys’ symphonic compositions. As a symphonist pur sang, his eight symphonies (with the last one unfinished) form the cornerstone of his oeuvre. The project encompasses two main objectives: >> Digitizing (transcribing into digital music notation) the scores and orchestral materials of symphonies that have yet to be released digitally. >> Gaining insights into his oeuvre and compositional practices through interviews.

Brewaeys' music

Brewaeys’ music is characterized by its complete devotion and exuberance: he aimed to include as much music as possible in a single minute. In his orchestral scores, hundreds of dancing notes often fill the pages. A clear handwriting and utmost precision were essential for notating his music. Despite Brewaeys’ impeccable handwriting, the digital editions of his symphonies will make them more accessible for contemporary music practices. Brewaeys’ compositional process unfolded entirely in his mind—from a conceptual idea in undefined sounds to a concrete realization in musical parameters like pitch, melodies, and chords. He did not produce sketches or drafts. Writing the actual notes on paper was merely the final, and comparatively minor, step of his creative process. Through in-depth interviews with individuals closely involved in Brewaeys’ creative process, the project aims to gain further insight into the composer’s intentions and musical language.
